Ask Your Community
Sometimes the thing you need is not listed anywhere. Someone two floors up has a pressure washer in their store room, or is driving to the airport at the same hour as you. Ask Your Community lets you say what you are looking for, and lets neighbours reply in a way you can actually act on.
It is part of LendNest, alongside Borrow and Give Away. Everything happens inside your own verified residential community.
The five kinds of request
Choosing a type is what makes a request answerable. It tells your neighbours what kind of reply is useful, and it shapes the details you are asked for.
Borrow
You need something for a day or a weekend and would rather not buy it. A drill for two shelves, a ladder, a suitcase before a trip.
A neighbour replies that they can lend it, give it away, or sell it.
Buy / Find
You are looking to buy something second-hand, or simply cannot find where to get it nearby.
A neighbour replies that they have one to sell or pass on.
Ride / Carpool
You are heading to the airport, the office, or across the city and would rather share the trip.
A neighbour either has a ride with seats, or would like to join yours.
Help
A task that is easier with another pair of hands — moving a cupboard, assembling furniture, setting up for an event.
A neighbour replies that they can help, and says when they are free.
Group / Split
Something that only makes sense if a few people share the cost or the effort.
A neighbour replies that they would like to join in.
What happens after you post
- Your request goes to your community. Only verified members of your society see it. It carries the dates you need and how far you are willing to go.
- Neighbours respond. Each response is structured, so you can compare them instead of scrolling back through a chat.
- You review and accept one. The responses that need a decision from you appear in My Activity, so nothing is missed.
- You coordinate. Agree a pickup point and time. Contact details are shared only if both of you choose to share them.
- You close it. Mark it completed once it has actually happened, or mark it found elsewhere if you sorted it out another way.
Privacy
- Community membership is verified before anyone can post or reply.
- Requests are visible only inside your own community, and are never indexed by search engines.
- Neighbours see your first name. Not your full name, email address or flat number.
- A mobile number is shared only when its owner opts in, and only after a response has been accepted.
- Meeting points are common areas: the lobby, the clubhouse, the gate.
Why not just post in the society group?
Group chats are good at conversation and poor at keeping track. A request sent into a busy group scrolls away within the hour, replies arrive out of order, and a week later nobody can tell whether you found the thing. That is a limitation of chat as a format, not of any particular app.
A community request keeps its replies attached to it, shows whether it is still open, and tells you which responses are waiting on your decision. We have written about that difference in more detail.
Common questions
- What is a community request on LendNest?
- A community request is a short, structured post telling your verified residential community what you are looking for. It has a type, a category, the dates you need it, and a status you can see at a glance. Neighbours reply with a structured response rather than a free-text message, so you can compare replies and accept one.
- Who can see my request?
- Only verified members of your own community. Requests are not public, are not listed on the open web, and are not indexed by search engines. Someone from another society cannot see them.
- Can I ask for something I cannot find in the listings?
- Yes. That is the main reason the feature exists. If nobody has listed what you need, you can ask for it instead of waiting for a listing to appear.
- How do people respond?
- With a structured response that matches the type of request. For a borrow request a neighbour says they can lend, give or sell the item. For a ride they say they have a ride or would like to join. Each response can carry dates, a meeting point and a short note.
- How does LendNest protect my phone number?
- Your number is never shown in the community feed. It is shared only if you choose to share it, and only once you and the other person are connected through an accepted response. Either side can decline to share, and the request still works — you can sort out the details on the request itself.
- What happens to a request I no longer need?
- You can cancel it, mark it as found elsewhere, or leave it to expire. Requests do not stay open forever, so neighbours are not responding to something you sorted out weeks ago.
- How is this different from posting in the society group?
- A group message is a single line of chat. It has no state, so nobody can tell whether you still need the thing, who offered, or what you decided. A community request keeps the replies together, shows its current status, and lands the ones that need your decision in My Activity.
